In Sri Lanka, a group of Muslim MPs have agreed to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) including changing the minimum age of marriage to 18 years. MP Faizer Mustapha told our correspondent that they have requested Ministry of Muslim Religious Affairs to submit a draft in this regard which will be discussed in the cabinet.
''
''He said, the MPs have agreed to raise the age of marriage for both the bride and the groom to 18 years, making it compulsory for bride to sign the register of marriage as a sign of her consent and permitting female to adjudicate family law of Muslims.
''
''The developments came after Easter Sunday attacks as Muslims are increasingly under pressure to adopt a common Sri Lankan identity. Muslim women groups have been demanding changes to the MMDA long before the attacks saying it infringes on gender equality. The government has already announced that it will bring changes to Madrasas Act in a bid to regulate them while ban was imposed on burqas after the attacks.
