Sri Lanka: Mahinda Rajapaksa confident of making comeback in power

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has expressed confidence that he will make a comeback in country's government adding that people are with him. Talking to a group of foreign correspondents in Colombo this morning, Mr. Rajapaksa asserted that the dawn of new year will bring the real change people are looking for. Mr. Rajapaksa, who was defeated by Maithripala Sirisena at Presidential elections held in January 2015, said that the current government has mismanaged the political and economic situation and public opinion is slowly turning against them.

The former President, though part of Sirisena's Srilanka Freedom Party, SLFP, is the leading figure of Joint Opposition, formed to challenge the policies of current government. Asked to identify some mistakes of his regime, the former President said that one of the reasons for his defeat could be his failure to communicate his viewpoint to the public.

Mr. Rajapaksa also opposed the ongoing process of new constitution making saying there is no need of a new constitution and a couple of amendments would suffice to bring the desired changes.

The former President accepted that India had helped him defeat LTTE but later on developed some misunderstanding with his government in relation with its engagement with China. Mr. Rajapakse said that India had objected to docking of Chinese submarine at Colombo port but is presently silent on sale of Hambantota port to Chinese company.
