In Sri Lanka, the leader of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R Sampanthan today criticized country's leadership for not doing enough to meet Tamil aspirations. <br/><br/>Speaking during an adjournment motion in Parliament today, the Tamil leader said he is extremely unhappy with the way their people are being treated by this government with respect to their land. <br/><br/>He said Tamil people are beginning to ask if this government is treating them any differently from previous governments. His comment is a departure from moderate ways adopted by Tamil leadership towards the current government led by President Maithripala Sirisena. TNA is facing pressure from several of its factions because of slow pace of the government on reconciliation measures. <br/><br/>There have been protests in various parts of northern province as thousands of acres of civilian land are still under military occupation while little is being done to meet Tamil aspirations. TNA had supported the election of President Sirisena against Mahinda Rajapakse in 2015 in the hope that they will deliver to achieve long lasting peace.<br/><br/>Mr. Sampanthan said that ethnic violence against Tamils is an imminent danger until there is political resolution of the conflict. He also advocated of the need for a new constitution which is still under deliberations but the progress has been very slow. The present government had passed a resolution in Parliament last year for drafting a new constitution and getting it approved through a two-thirds Parliamentary vote and a referendum. However, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President Sirisena is dragging its foot on the resolution. Some SLFP leaders have been maintaining that they will not support any amendments which require a referendum.
