Sri Lanka: Indian community gathers in large numbers to celebrate Republic Day

The Indian community in Sri Lanka gathered in large numbers to celebrate Republic Day. The main function was held at India House in Colombo where High Commissioner Taranjeet Singh Sandhu unfurled the tricolor. <br/><br/>A contingent of Border Security Force turned out in their ceremonial dress to salute the national flag. The High Commissioner also read out President Pranab Mukherjee's message.<br/>'<br/>In his remarks, Mr Sandhu appreciated the excellent contribution of Indians based in Sri Lanka for the development of the country.<br/><br/>Artists of the Indian Cultural Centre presented a programme of traditional Indian dance and music. Later the officials of the Indian High Commission paid floral tribute at the Indian Peace Keeping Force memorial for the soldiers who had laid down their lives during the Sri Lankan Civil War.<br/><br/>Similar functions were also held in Indian consulates at Jaffna and Hambantota.
