Sri Lanka: Fundamental rights petition filed with SC against holding general elections on June 20

<span style="color: #222222;">In Sri Lanka, a Fundamental rights petition has been filed with the Supreme Court against holding General elections on June 20. A lawyer filed the petition claiming that the gazette notification in question is unconstitutional. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The petitioner argued that constitution mandates convening a new Parliament no later than 3 months from the date of proclamation of the dissolution of Parliament.<br />'' <br />'' Sri Lankan parliament was dissolved on March 2nd and the new parliament was supposed to meet before June 2nd but the scheduled elections on April 25th were postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak. Opposition parties have demanded reconvening of old parliament but President has ruled out this suggestion. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The petitioner has sought an interim order preventing the election commission to hold General election until a verdict on the petition is delivered. Sri Lanka has 521 active cases and no person has been tested positive today.</span>
