Sri Lanka former Army Chief Fonseka taken into custody

Sri Lanka former Army Chief and defeated opposition common candidate, retired General Sarath Fonseka was taken into custody by the military police late last night from the `safe house’ where he has been living in since he lost the January 26 Presidential election to the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa by a huge margin.<br/><br/>Military spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasingha confirmed to AIR that the General has been taken into custody for ‘certain fraudulent act’ and ‘committing military offences’ for which there are some evidences and investigations are on.<br/><br/>Earlier the Sri Lankan Government had alleged that Sarath Fonseka had been plotting a coup against the government and said that he was harbouring military deserters. It was also alleged that Sarath Fonseka was plotting to assassinate the Sri Lankan President<br/><br/>The Military spokesman said that Senaka de Silva media secretary of Sarath Fonseka who was an ex captain in the Sri Lankan army was also taken into custody. He is also to be questioned for his role in the alleged plot.<br/><br/>The Director General of the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS), Lakshman Hullugalle told state television that Sarath Fonseka may be Court marshaled for the military crimes alloegedly committed by him.<br/><br/>The former army chief had resigned last year following a fall out with President Rajapaksa over certain issues.<br/><br/>
