Sri Lanka: Family of newspaper editor criticises govt for failing to bring killers to justice

In Sri Lanka, the family of a newspaper editor, who was killed nine years ago, has criticized the government for failing to bring his killers to justice. Marking the ninth death anniversary of Lasantha Wickrematunga, his brother accused the government of using the case as a political tool without ensuring justice. In a statement, he said there was a sense of hopelessness over the government's handling of the case adding that justice needs to be done not as a favour, but to prevent repetition.

The criticism came as President Maithripala Sirisena had promised to bring the perpetrators to justice when he came to power in 2015 after ousting Mahinda Rajapakse. Incidentally, Mr. Sirisena marks completion of three years in office today. The killing had sparked an international outcry and exposed human rights violations in Sri Lanka under former president Mahinda Rajapakse.
