In Sri Lanka, an election monitoring body has emphasized that necessary legal provisions should be made to balance the media during the elections.
''
'' People's Actions for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said in its interim report that one of the outstanding problems in the last presidential election held last month was the use of the media. Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi said, maintaining balance in media is crucial in an election and the conduct of the media was problematic at the last election.
''
'' He said, it is important that the legislature pay attention to maintain a balanced media before the next election and PAFFREL will propose to the Elections Commission to grade the media during elections. Mr. Rohana said, the media that remains neutral should be commended and such an assessment would stop the misuse of the media during the election period.
''
'' Mr. Hettiarachchi also pointed out that the use of social media was also unruly during the last presidential election and stressed the need for drafting legislation to prevent the incorporation of bad information into the election process through social media.
''
