Earlier, the commission was to call for nominations to all 336 bodies but a legal petition led to a court granting stay order on the new election gazette.

Mr. Desapriya said that 203 bodies are affected by the order while 40 have got printing errors. He said that the nominations for these bodies can also be called together if the legal hurdle is removed early. Election to these bodies are due for more than two years and repeated delays have caused a political storm in the country.

Opposition parties have brought a no confidence motion against Minister for local government and provincial administration Mr. Faizer Mustapha for the legal hurdle in conduct of elections.

The issue has also divided the two main parties in government with United National Party (UNP) led by PM Ranil Wicremsinghe blaming Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President Maithripala Sirsena for the delay.
