Sri Lanka: EC sets in motion process for election to 93 local govt bodies

In Sri Lanka, Election Commission has set in motion today the process for election to 93 Local Government bodies. District returning officers have called for nominations which can be filed between 11th and 14th of next month. <br/><br/>They have begun accepting the deposits placed by the candidates from today. Elections to only 93 out of 336 bodies have been called because a legal petition led to a court granting stay order on the new election gazette. <br/><br/>The government has assured the opposition parties and civil society groups that they will seek a speedy hearing by the court so that elections to all bodies can be held simultaneously. <br/><br/>Election to these bodies are due for more than two years and repeated delays have caused a political storm in the country. Opposition parties have brought a no-confidence motion against Minister for local government and provincial administration Mr Faizer Mustapha for the legal hurdle in the conduct of elections.
