Human Rights Watch today said the Sri Lankan government has not met its promise to curtail police abuses prior to the March session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). <br/><br/>The agency's Asia director Brad Adams said in a statement that Sri Lankan government has failed to repeal the abusive Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) or take serious measures to reduce torture in custody. It said that the UNHRC should consider closely whether Sri Lanka made progress in the security sector as well as its other commitments such as transitional justice. <br/><br/>The statement said nearly 18 months after making important promises to the council, Sri Lanka's leaders appear to be backtracking on key human rights issues, including reforming the police.<br/>The comments came as UNHRC is scheduled to review the progress made in Sri Lanka on its 2015 resolution promising for security reforms and addressing the war crimes. <br/><br/>Foreign minister Mangala Samarweera is to make a representation to the council on Monday seeking for more time to implement the resolutions. Sri Lankan government had promised to set up an office for missing persons and set up a credible judicial mechanism to probe war crimes but the progress on it has been very slow.
