Sri Lanka concludes Review under 4th Cycle of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva

Sri Lanka has concluded its Review under the 4th Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, today. Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, as the leader of the Sri Lanka delegation, delivered the remarks through a pre-recorded video statement. The minister said that the immediate priority of Sri Lanka is economic recovery, yet the Government remains committed to the UPR process towards the advancement of human rights.<br />''<br />''Mr Sabry said Sri Lanka's National Report captures the progress made over the last 4 ½ years and also the challenges faced in the process of implementing the recommendations accepted during the previous cycle. <br />''<br />''He added that human rights are enshrined in Sri Lanka's Constitution and are justiciable in the courts. He also highlighted the role of media and civil society in development and reconciliation efforts at various levels. Mr. Sabry enumerated the challenges faced by the island nation during the period under review from 2017 to 2022 which included 2019 Easter attacks, COVID-19 Pandemic, and the effects of the Ukraine conflict.<br />''<br />''The Universal Periodic Review was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) in 2006, as a State-driven voluntary peer-review process which provides the opportunity for each State to declare the steps taken at the national level to improve the human rights situation at that State and to fulfil their human rights obligations.<br />
