Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said that he is against forming a national government by joining a party with only one MP. He stated this while addressing the 71st Independence Day celebrations in Colombo today.
''
''President said that it was not correct to form a national government just to give more ministerial portfolios. He said the country should move away from the practice of concentrating on one's political camp and thinking of political aspirations. His comments came as United National Party (UNP) led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has brought a resolution in parliament for formation of a national government.
''
''The resolution stated that the UNP would form a national government with several parties that would uphold the principles of good governance. UNP has said that the names of the parties would be announced later but media reports suggested UNP will tie up with lone MP of a Muslim party to form the national government.
''
''A national government will allow cabinet size to be increased to 48 from the existing limit of 30 ministers. UNP and SLFP had formed a national government after elections in 2015 but SLFP's withdrawal from the government and removal of Mr. Wickremsinghe on October 26 last year led to weeks-long crisis in the country.
''
''Meanwhile, the National day celebrations were held with usual fanfare and enthusiasm. Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was the guest of honour at the main function held in Colombo. The three branches of military performed an impressive parade along with display of defence equipments while artistes and students showcased the major dance forms of the country including Kandyan and Bharatnatyam.
