In Sri Lanka, a bandh called by Tamil political parties in northern province has affected normal life. Universities, schools, banks, shops and several other institutions are closed, in protest of the deaths of two Jaffna University students in police firing last Friday. Police said the two third-year students at the Arts faculty of the Jaffna University had crashed into a wall, resulting in their deaths, but a postmortem examination found a bullet lodged in the body of one of the students.

Five policemen have been arrested in connection with the deaths and government has ordered an independent enquiry into the incident. The Inter University Student's Federation said they would join hands with the Jaffna University students to protest at various universities across the island. Students across Sri Lankan universities protested yesterday including southern universities that have a predominantly Sinhala student population. The Students Union has sought a fair investigation into the case, and urged the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka to intervene.
