Sri Lanka assures that Indian fishermen will not be attacked

The Sri Lankan High Commissioner Mr. Prasad Kariawasam has assured that Indian fishermen will not be attacked even if they had crossed the Sri Lankan waters. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai on Tuesday after meeting the Chief Secretary Ms .Malathy he said that the attack on Mahabodhi temple in Chennai yesterday is to be condemned. The High Commissioner said that these type of incidents disturb and perplex the situation. Replying to a query, he said that as Sri Lanka is in the process of resettlement, reconstruction and reconciliation, there should be no elements to disturb peace and harmony prevailing in both countries. He said that to prevent the attacks on Indian fishermen in the high seas a working group of fisheries department of both the countries can provide a solution to it. Calling India a friend and a brother, Mr.Kariawasam that it is best for both of them to observe the boundary line, but even in case of faults, Sri Lankan Navy has been advised not to fire on innocent fishermen. Referring to the recent incidents in which two fishermen were killed within ten days, he said that he is aggrieved about them. Gratefully acknowledging the support by India in the resettlement and demining of the Northern province, he said that Sri Lanka on the other hand has also supported India for a permanent seat in UNSC. He said that the Tamilnadu Government has ensured protection for the Sri Lankans who are living in the State as well as for those visiting the Country. Looking forward to building a peaceful united Sri Lanka, he said that both countries should remain friends. Earlier Mr.Kariawasam visited the four people including two monks who were injured at the Mahabodhi Society Temple office in Chennai on Monday.
