Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that his country does not enter into military alliances or make its bases available to foreign countries. He made the remarks in wake of his government's decision to lease out Hambantota port to a Chinese company. <br/><br/>Addressing the second Indian Ocean conference in Colombo last evening, Mr. Wickremsinghe said that only the Sri Lanka Armed Forces have the responsibility for military activities in their Ports and Airports. He said that maintaining the Freedom of Navigation is of paramount importance for Sri Lanka to become the Hub in the Indian Ocean. <br/><br/>The Sri Lankan PM welcomed the initiative by India to organize the conference saying it provides the re-establishment of the Indian Ocean Region as an economic entity and to ensure closer regional cooperation. <br/><br/>External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, in her address had said that India is willing to share its responsibility for peace and security in the Indian ocean region. Smt. Swaraj, who is on two -day visit to Sri Lanka, to participate in the conference, will call on President Maithripala Sirisena today. She will have a meeting with Sri Lankan foreign minister Tilak Marapana before leaving back home.
