Sri Lanka: 113 votes achieved to show majority, says President

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Monday said, 113 MP votes needed to show majority for the newly appointed government has been achieved even as the parliament speaker refused to recognize the government of Mahinda Rajapaksa. <br />''<br />''<br />''Addressing a rally organized by Rajapaksa supporters in Colombo this afternoon, Mr. Sirisena said that he will not take back the step he took forward and urged the speaker not to do anything that would cause clashes among the people. <br />''<br />''<br />''He pointed out that both speaker Karu Jayasuriya and deputy leader of UNP Sajith Premadasa, refused the premiership before he offered the position to Mahinda Rajapaksa. <br />''<br />''<br />''Criticising the government of Mr. Wickremsinghe, he said poor people were suppressed by his economic and political vision where an extreme neo-liberal form of governance was carried out. <br />''<br />''<br />''Mr. Rajapaksa in his address appealed to Tamils and Muslims in the country to support him and assured that he will work towards addressing their issues. He said, the policy of the new Government will ensure, it benefits the whole country.<br />''<br />''<br />''Earlier, the parliament speaker Mr Jayasuriya said he will not recognize the new government until they show majority in parliament. In a statement, he came down heavily on President saying that he will accept the opinion of the majority of members that the changes done in parliament were unconstitutional and against the norms. <br />''<br />''<br />''<span style="color: #222222;">His statement came after President Sirisena called for Parliament session on 14th of this month, against demands to call it this week.</span>
