Spreading Pakistan floods affect 4 million people, says UN

After the flood disaster in Pakistan worsens, the United Nations says that there are now four million people in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh without shelter. In all, some eight million people across the country need urgent help. A UN spokesman said the present situation is of high concern. At the same time the UN is meeting later today in a special session to discuss the unfolding disaster in detail. Reports say that in Punjab and Sindh provinces more villages have been flooded and more people have been displaced. A massive volume of flood water is moving through the country, breaching some defences and adding to the devastation. Meanwhile, the UN said, its response to its emergency appeal has improved. It is now almost half way towards its target. But the world body also warned that the number of people in need is growing from an estimated six million to eight million. Some of those in Pakistan have expressed dismay at the slow response. However, there is also talk about the need for transparency in allocating and spending funds.
