Sports Ministry seeks suggestions from States to tackle spot fixing in Cricket

Sports Ministry has sought suggestions from States to tackle the menace of spot fixing in Cricket. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, Sports Minister Jitendra Singh called for a long term plan to deal with this menace. Referring to spot fixing issue he said, his ministry has no control over BCCI and IPL. On weather BCCI Chief N. Srinivasan whose son in law is allegedly involved in the betting should step down, he said people need to think for themselves.

In a related development, IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla and BCCI Vice President Arun Jaitley today strongly advocated for a tough law to deal with spot fixing. Talking to reporters after a meeting with Law Minister Kapil Sibal in New Delhi, Mr. Shukla said that they have suggested to the Law Minister to bring a legislation for the purpose.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police has declined the request of son-in-law and CEO of CSK Gurunath Meiyappan to extend the deadline to appear before them on Monday for questioning in connection with the betting. Reports from Chennai says, Meiyappan and his father in law and BCCI Chief N. Srinivasan are leaving for Mumbai.

Meiyappan had yesterday sought time till Monday to appear before Mumbai police, hours after they issued summons to him for personal appearance between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. today. Meiyappan is under the crime branch scanner for his proximity to Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh who was arrested for his alleged association with bookmakers.
