Sports Minister Vijay Goel says misdirected youth can cause substantial damage to society

Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel has said harmony can bring fruits of development for everyone but misdirected youth can cause substantial damage to the society.

Addressing the first convocation of the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development at Sriperumbudur near Chennai, he said India's population will reach 1.3 billion by 2020 with the median age of 28.

The youthful demographic dividend offers a great opportunity for India if the youth are imparted skills.

Mr Goel said Indian higher education institutions are governed by highest standards of ethics and accountability with every single of them being peer reviewed and accredited.

One in every four graduate is an Indian in the world now. However, inadequate infrastructure, large vacancies in faculty positions, low enrolment rate for higher studies and declining research standards need to be addressed, he pointed out.

The minister insisted that the system needs to be modernized so that graduates are made employment ready.
