Aiming to clinch more medals in international events like the Olympics, the government's new 10-year plan would identify talent from rural areas. Sports Minister Jitendra Singh said this in Chennai today. He told reporters that the government has made the plan in the Ministry of Sports which will include identifying talents from rural areas and sending them to districts and giving them training. The Minister said those doing well during the training would be sent for 'world class' coaching at Sports Authority of India centres of excellence. He said 28 centres of excellence are being developed where world class coaching will be given. He also said the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, will be strengthened to churn out more coaches. Along with that, a lot of foreign coaches will also be taken over the next few years. And India will be sending the players abroad also, he said. Observing that sports needed to be connected with livelihood and career progression, which was not seen as of now, he said, there is a need to connect sports with various courses and various corporate houses so that a good sportsman gets a job also after he performs.
