Sporadic firing between security forces and Taliban militants 9 killed,24 injured

After sporadic firing and blasts all through last night near Kabul’s diplomatic area attacked by insurgents on Tuesday, firing has again intensified early this morning. They blasted bombs and fired rocket propelled grenades and their targets were the NATO headquarters, the American Embassy and the Afghan Intelligence Agency Office situated near high security diplomatic area. The Afghan security forces with the help of the NATO coalition forces failed their attack as no harm has been caused to the three establishments. Some insurgents are still holed up in a multi-storied building and are firing at nearby NATO headquarter and other nearby places. NATO helicopters are constantly circling the sky around the area to to free the building of the insurgents. According to media reports at least twelve people have been killed and 24 wounded in four attacks overnight. However the number of casualties could not be confirmed from the official sources. Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said that the insurgent attacks on Kabul were aimed at derailing the security transition process in Afghanistan. A press release issued by the President’s office in Kabul last evening says that such attacks can not stop the security transition process in the country. Strongly condemning the attack President Karzai has said that the attacks have rather emboldened his gvernment’s determination to take the responsibility of the country’s own affairs. Mr. Karzai also praised the rapid and timely action taken by the security personnel in controlling the situation. After a night of intermittent firing and blasts, firing again intensified in Kabul this morning. NATO helicopters are still hovering the building which was taken over by the insurgents on Tuesday. This is second major terror attack on Kabul within a month. Last month the insurgents attacked British cultural centre in Kabul. It seems that they want to prove their power by attacking high security areas. They also want to derail the ongoing security transition process in Afghanistan. But such attacks only show their despair. Afghan President has emphatically said that this attack has emboldened his government’s resolve to take the responsibility of country’s security.
