The advent of the New Year in Delhi was marked by spontaneous celebrations. AIR correspondent reports, as soon as the clock struck midnight, crowds burst into joy to herald the beginning of 2012. Braving the chill, everyone was excited.
Men, women and children were equally enthusiastic. The sound of crackers pervaded the foggy atmosphere . All popular markets and fun spots were packed to capacity.
The festivities continued till early this morning. No untoward incident was reported. Connaught Place was the epicenter of the celebrations.
Most of the shops were open. The city police had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful celebrations. Vehicles were checked at roads, malls and hotels for any violation of traffic rules.
The Delhiites echoed with Lord Tennyson who said: Ring out the old, Ring in the new, Ring happy bells across the snow
