Speed up political solution to Syria crisis: UN envoy to Russia & US

The UN envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi has called upon the U S and Russia to speed up the process for a political solution to the crisis in Syria. In an interview to Swiss Radio, he hoped that the deal on dismantling of Syria’s chemical weapons will give a push to the revival of Geneva-II peace conference. Meanwhile, the UN envoys of the five permanent members of Security Council will meet in New York today to discuss the draft resolution to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons.

Our West Asia correspondent reports that the UN envoy said Russia and the US should mobilize other countries and stakeholders in the peace process to move towards a political solution in Syria. He ruled out any military solution to the conflict and said no side can win the war. Brahimi warned that a drawn-out war risks pulling Syria apart and we might see a situation like Somalia where warlords will do whatever they want. On the issue whether Syrian President Assad should quit, he said the Geneva accord in 2012 didn’t set a pre-condition and provided for a deal by mutual consent.

The UN envoy said that Syria needs a change and all sides in Syria must have strong political will to save their country. Brahimi is scheduled to meet US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York on September 28th to finalize the likely dates for the international conference on Syria.
