The special session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly over the Mullaperiyar dam issue was convened today. Moving the unanimous resolution, the Tamilnadu Chief Minister Ms.J.Jayalalithaa took historical accounts of the Mullaperiyar dam. Referring to dams of similar nature at the US, France and England, the Chief Minister assured that Mullaperiyar was safe in all aspects.Taking note of the various measures towards strengthening the dam, she said that utmost care and concern of the lives of the people in the area was taken into account while ensuring the safety aspects. Elaborating on it, Ms. Jayalalithaa said that 12 thousand tomes of concrete were used to strengthen the dam from different sides. She also said that water from the dam has been irrigating 2.23 lakh acres of land in Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.The resolution passed in the Assembly seeks immediate deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force at the vicinity of the Mullaperiyar dam. It also states that Kerala Government should bring in necessary amendments in the Kerala Irrigation and water protection Act passed in 2006 and accept the Supreme Court’s order to increase the water level to 142 ft.The resolution also stated that it should allow Tamil Nadu to continue the strengthening work at the Dam so that the water level is raised to 152 ft. The Assembly also resolved to unanimously sustain the rights of Tamil Nadu on the issue.
