A six member team of the Election Commission has arrived in Kolkata for an independent assessment of the law and order situation in West Bengal before the assembly polls. Chief Electoral officer of Bihar Sudhir Kumar Rakesh is heading the team which includes five senior police officers. The EC team will visit political violence hit areas of the state to have first hand information on law and order situation. After on the spot assessment, the team will submit its report to the Commission. AIR Kolkata correspondent reports that the election commission decided to send a fact finding team to West Bengal for an independent assessment of the situation following sharp deterioration of law and order after the recent Netai episode in Lalgarh.Meanwhile, the ruling CPI(M) has termed the Election Commission decision as unprecedented. Party General Secretary Prakash Karat said in Kolkata yesterday that they do not know the reason for the commission's unusual steps.
