A special Mumbai court today issued a non-bailable warrant against former IPL boss Lalit Modi. The Enforcement Directorate has moved the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act – PMLA court in Mumbai seeking a non-bailable warrant after Modi did not respond to the summons sent to him. During the arguments special judge P R Bhavake had yesterday sought to know why the agency was not arresting him and whether a warrant can be issued during the investigation.

Observing that ED was yet to file a charge sheet naming Lalit Modi as an accused, Judge Bhavake wondered whether the court can issue warrant against such a person. ED's lawyer Hiten Venegoankar said Lalit Modi was not available in India and had not complied with the summons issued to him since 2009. He further cited the Supreme Court ruling saying that a non-bailable warrant can be issued during the investigation stage. Enforcement Directorate is probing a money-laundering case against Lalit Modi filed by the BCCI. The case is related to the 2008 deal between World Sports Group and Multi Screen Media for television rights of Indian Premier League worth Rs 425 crore.
