Special CBI court in Ranchi convicts 52 in fodder scam cases

A special CBI court in Ranchi today convicted 52 people in one of the fodder scam cases. The convicts include two former regional directors of the Animal Husbandry Department (AHD), for fraudulently withdrawing about 20 crore rupees from a treasury in Ranchi in the 1990s. Special CBI Judge A H Ansari awarded eight of the convicts who had been suppliers of the Department, three years imprisonment and a fine amount up to ten lakh rupees. The judge will pronounce tomorrow the quantum of sentence against the rest 44, including former Regional Directors Dr Junul Bhengraj and Dr K N Jha. The multi-million rupee scam, popularly known as the fodder scam, surfaced in 1996 during undivided Bihar.A total 61 cases related to the scam were transferred to Jharkhand after it was carved out of Bihar in November 2000. Special CBI courts have passed judgments in 32 cases. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra have been named as accused in five cases.
