South-West monsoon rains in the country as a whole during the June-September period are likely to be below normal. Science and Technology Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal today told reporters in New Delhi that monsoon rains are expected to be at 95% of the long-term average.In April, the Meteorological Department had forecast that rainfall this year is likely to be normal. Our correspondent reports, the June-September monsoon is crucial for kharif crops such as rice, sugarcane, pulses, cotton and oilseeds as about 60 per cent of the country's agricultural land is rain-fed.
