South-West monsoon may be near normal

South-West monsoon in the country during the June-September period is likely to be near normal. Science and Technology Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal today told reporters in New Delhi that monsoon rains are expected to be at 95% of the long-term average. He, however, said that this is not likely to impact country's agriculture adversly as distribution of rainfall across the country so far has been uniform.In April, the Meteorological Department had forecast that rainfall this year is likely to be normal. Our correspondent reports, the June-September monsoon is crucial for kharif crops such as rice, sugarcane, pulses, cotton and oilseeds as about 60 per cent of the country's agricultural land is rain-fed.
