South Pak braces for more floods

The flood waters that have inundated northern Pakistan are threatening new areas in the south. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes. Reports say, the vast body of flood waters which swept the length of Pakistan is threatening fresh communities in the province of Sindh at the country's southern tip. Officials in Thatta district have been organising the hasty evacuation of about lakhs of people in a town and many surrounding villages. An emergency has been declared in the area as a dam nearby has now started to crack. Meanwhile, Pakistani and UN officials say that deadly water-borne diseases are on the rise among victims of the country's worst floods in history. As President Zardari put it, Pakistan could take years to recover from the natural disaster that has displaced millions of people across the country. Pakistani troops, local charities and UN and international agencies are trying to provide food, medicine and shelter to victims of the floods. But, nearly a month after the disaster hit Pakistan, humanitarian workers say millions of flood ravaged people have received little or no help. In a related development, the United Nations said, the aid operation in Pakistan urgently needs 40 helicopters to get supplies to people cut off by floods.
