South Africa's AB de Villiers has hit the fastest century in one-day internationals. He achieved the feat today against the West Indies in Johannesburg in the second encounter of the 5-match ODI series. The 30-year-old South African captain needed just 31 balls to reach 100–five balls fewer than Corey Anderson's hundred for New Zealand against the West Indies in 2013/14.Villiers went to fifty off 16 balls, one fewer than Sanath Jayasuriya's previous record for the fastest half-century, for Sri Lanka against Pakistan in 1995/96, then powered his way past Anderson's record. Overall, De Villiers made 149 off 44 balls. His innings included 16 sixes, which equalled the record set by Rohit Sharma on the way to a score of 209 for India against Australia in Bangalore in 2013/14. South Africa scored an imposing 439 for two after being sent in to bat. That was the second highest total in one-day internationals.During the innings, opener Hashim Amla remained unbeaten on 153. The opening partnership between him and Rilee Rossouw who made 128, yielded 247 runs. South Africa went past their own previous highest total-the 438 for nine they scored in a record run chase against Australia on the same ground in 2005/06. Sri Lanka's holds the world record of 443 for nine, made against the Netherlands in 2006.
