Preliminary election results in South Africa show the main opposition party has made gains, but most voters still cast ballots for the dominant African National Congress party. With preliminary tallies in from almost all municipalities, the opposition Democratic Alliance has about 22 per cent of the vote. That is up from about 17 per cent in the last national elections in 2009. Political analysts say, the election campaign's focus on issues and services was a sign of South Africa's growing political maturity. The ANC has been in power since the end of apartheid in 1994. Final election results are expected by the weekend.
