India's Sourabh Verma has advanced to the semifinals in the singles competition of the Malaysian Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament. In the quarter-final at Pasir Gudang in Johor Bahru today, eighth seed Sourabh overcame Chinese Taipei's Tien Chen Chou 22-20 18-21 21-15 in a thrilling contest. Sourabh will next face Malaysia's Wei Feng Chong.But it was curtains for RMV Gurusaidutt and P C Thulasi in the singles competition. Sixth seed Gurusaidutt went down fighting to Feng Chong 12-21 21-5 19-21 in his quarter-final match. Thulasi, too, failed to cross the quarterfinal hurdle as she was knocked out by Adrianti Firdasari of Indonesia 17-21 21-17 18-21 in 53 minutes. That ended India's challenge in the women's singles category. India's men's doubles pair of Alwin Francis and Arun Vishnu and the mixed doubles combo of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Siki Reddy have also bowed out of the competition.
