Sonia, Shinde visit Assam to take stock of relief measures

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today visited relief camps in Kokrajhar district of Assam. Accompanied by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other state ministers, both the leaders met inmates at Titaguri and Debargaon relief camps. Later, Mrs. Gandhi and Mr. Shinde also met representatives of various civil society organisations. Later, they will visit relief camps at Barkanda and Maaspara in Dhubri district. Earlier, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhubaneshwar Kalita welcomed both leaders at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport at Barjhar in Guwahati.

It may be recalled that earlier Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and former Union Home Minister and present Finance Minister P Chidambaram also visited the violence hit areas. The Prime Minister announced 300 crore rupees for the relief and rehabilitation measures. Meanwhile, the opposition Asom Gana Parishad, AGP holds protest demonstration against state government’s alleged failure in maintaining law and order situation, among others. All Assam Students Union, AASU has also called for a state wide demonstration to demand early implementation of the Assam Accord.

The inmates of the camps gave warm welcome to Sonia Gandhi and Union Home minister amidst sunny but hot and humid condition in Kokrajhar. The inmates of the camp told Mrs. Gandhi that Assam government is fully taking care of them. The UPA Chairperson asked the inmates if they have any complaints regarding the relief measures. The people who have taken shelter in Titaguri replied that all the required rations are being provided to them. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi also said that as soon as situation becomes calm and normal, all the people can go home.

A team of intellectuals including eminent writers, artists is visiting camps in Chirang district to promote goodwill and amity among different sections of the people.
