The stage is set for formal declaration of Sonia Gandhi to be elected as the President of the Congress party for a record fourth time in a row. Except for 2000, Sonia Gandhi was elected unopposed twice earlier and she has been steering the party ever since 1998 after she replaced Sita Ram Kesri. Briefing media, Chairman of the Central Election Authority of the 125 year old party Oscar Fernandes, said the official announcement will be made tomorrow evening. Today was the last day of nominations for the post and Sonia Gandhi was the only candidate for whom nominations have been filed. Although the elections for the post was slated for the 17th of this month, as there is no other candidate she will be declared elected tomorrow itself, the last date for withdrawal of candidates. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Treasurer of the Party Motilal Vohra led the three groups which filed nominations in her favour. In all Fifty six sets of nominations were filed for her out of which one was declared invalid. The maximum of four sets of nominations were filed from Uttar Pradesh.’
