Sonia Gandhi re-elected as Chairperson of Congress Parliamentary Party

Sonia Gandhi has been re-elcted as the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, CPP. She was elected at the parliamentary party meeting in New Delhi this evening.

Her name was proposed by Mallikarjun Kharge and seconded by senior leaders including Mohsina Kidwai. Addressing the meeting, Sonia Gandhi sought inputs from MPs on strengths and weaknesses rather than public acrimony that would be critical for revamping the party.

She asked the leaders to draw appropriate lessons individually and collectively from the unprecedented setback in Lok Sabha polls. Congress President said that the party has also lost in the past but came back after losses.

Mrs Gandhi said, sitting in the Opposition provides opportunity for raising more issues, initiating more debates and always being the vigilant watchdog. She said, the pending legislative agenda that UPA had placed before the 15th Lok Sabha cannot be ignored.

She said, Congress will wait and see the attitude of the new government to the pending bills. She added that the party's strength has decreased in the Lok Sabha but it is still the largest party in the Rajya Sabha.

The Congress Parliamentary Party passed a resolution expressing hope that all progressive and secular forces will coordinate in Parliament effectively to project a cohesive and united opposition.

It appreciated outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for providing wise, sober and dignified leadership for a decade. The CPP also resolved to regroup, rebuild and revive under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The meeting greeted and offered its good wishes

to the incoming government led by Narendra Modi.
