Sonia Gandhi calls upon Centre and states to fight elements responsible for Assam violence

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has expressed serious concern over violent incidents in Assam. Speaking at a function in New Delhi, she said that the guilty must be brought to book. She asked the Centre and the states to come together and take firm action against such elements. Mrs. Gandhi said that the need of the our is that people should come together against such evil designs. She was speaking at the 20th Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhawana Award presentation ceremony.

The award was conferred on D.R.Mehta founder and Chief Patron of the organisation that popularised the Jaipur Foot. The ward was presented to him by Senior Congress leader Dr. Karan Singh.

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said, non-governmental organisations should join hands with the government in implementing social welfare schemes, so that the dreams of late Rajiv Gandhi can be realised.

The function was organised on the eve of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's 68th Birth Anniversary tomorrow.
