Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was today elected unopposed for the post of Congress President for the record fourth time in a row.The Chairman of the Central Election Authority of the Party, Oscar Fernandes made the formal announcement at a brief function at the party headquarters in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and several ministers and Congress leaders.In her brief speech, while thanking the Congressmen for electing her to the post, Mrs. Gandhi said that the post of the President of this great and historic party has a great responsibility towards the nation. She said, the right from the beginning the congress party has been representing the expectations of every section of society , every region and every generation.She said that whether Congress is in power or out of power, it must realize the responsibility and the big role. Mrs Gandhi said that everyone should work together to keep the flag of the Congress party flying.AIR correspondent says that bursting of crackers and beating of drums reverberated the air even as the Congress leaders made a beeline to congratulate her with bouquets of flowers.Mrs. Sonia Gandhi became the President of the 125 year old Congress party for the first time in 1998 when she replaced Sitaram Kesari. Mrs. Gandhi who steered the party to victory in 2004 was offered the post of Prime Ministership by the UPA but she declined and chose to lead the party.AIR correspondent Sarita Brara reports that the Head Quarters of the Congress party in the capital came alive this evening with beating drums and raising of slogans as Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was elected President or the fourth consecutive term to lead the oldest party of the country. While the congressmen celebrated the occasion with bursting of crackers , despite heavy showers, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi in a a sobering note, reminded the Congress party of the responsibilities that rest on its shoulders towards the nation and the aspirations of the people. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi who took over the reigns of the party after the crushing defeat it suffered in the 1998 Lok Sabha polls steered the party out of the turbulent times to return it to power in 2004. The party re-emerged with a more comfortable majority in 2009 under her leadership. A woman who was reluctant to join politics t today enjoys the confidence of the party and her leadership remains unchallenged.
