A steady stream of mourners led by Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday paid homage to veteran Congress leader K Karunakaran at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram where his mortal remains are kept. The UPA Chairperson, accompanied by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, placed a wreath and paid her respects to Karunakaran, who passed away at a private hospital on Thursday after a prolonged illness. She spoke to Karunakaran's son and daughter and conveyed her condolences. The body of Karunakaran is kept at KPCC headquarters Indira Bhavan for the public to pay respects to the departed leader. Later, his body would be kept at the government secretariat Dubar Hall before the funeral procession starts for Thrissur, where it would be cremated with full state honours on Saturday. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is scheduled to attend the funeral.
