UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister A.K. Antony have made an aerial survey of the natural calamity affected areas in Uttarakhand today. Heavy rain lashed the State for several days.Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi today urged the Centre to have an immediate assessment of the damage caused by floods and cloud bursts in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. A party press release said that she spoke to the Prime Minister on phone and pleaded for a liberal package to the affected States released through the National Calamity Relief Fund. Meanwhile, two Army officers, including a Colonel, were killed in an avalanche in Chamoli district. Rescue and relief operation is in full swing with the help of Army, ITBP and NDRF. Met department predicts moderate to rather heavy rain may occur in the state especially in Garhwal region.
