Some countries are scuttling SAARC cooperation: MEA official

In an apparent swipe at Pakistan, a senior External Affairs Ministry official on Monday said in Mumbai that some small countries are scuttling New Delhi's efforts to improve the economic cooperation among the members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Addressing the annual banking conference, FIBAC in Mumbai today, A M Gondane, Joint Secretary at the SAARC desk of the MEA, said the SAARC processes need complete consensus, as a tiny minority can put a spoke in its wheel. <br/><br/>Gondane informed that the MEA is working with the Finance Ministry to take forward the initiatives announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the last SAARC summit, including a special purpose facility for creating connectivity infrastructure and consecutively trade. Gondane also said there is an urgent need to increase the Saarc development fund to achieve bigger aims for the region.<br/><br/>
