Some 120 students successfully complete Hindi and Urdu courses in Egypt

Some 120 students have successfully completed Hindi and Urdu courses conducted by an Indian Culture Centre in Cairo, amid growing popularity of the two languages among Egyptians. The Indian Ambassador to Egypt, Mr. R Swaminathan, handed over certificates and diplomas to around 120 students who have passed Hindi and Urdu courses conducted by the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) last year. The function, which was held at MACIC premises in the capital on Tuesday, saw Egyptian students recite poems, songs, short stories and speeches on India.Since its establishment in 1992 as the first centre for Indian Culture in West Asia, the two Indian languages have been growing in popularity among the youths. Some 150 students are taught the two Indian languages at the Centre at any given time. The trend is seen as a tribute to Bollywood movies and the uniqueness of the Indian Culture. The Centre also screens Indian films in Hindi and Urdu, with Arabic sub-titles, twice a week and has a vast library of books, including in Hindi and Urdu at its premises. The Indian envoy said, Egyptian universities are seeking to cooperate with the Centre and have Hindi taught at their faculties, such as at the Aswan branch of Wadi al-Jadid University in Upper Egypt.
