Somdev wins men's singles gold in Asiad; India stands at 8th position

In the 16th Asian Games on Tuesday, India won One Gold and two Bronze medals. Somdev Devvarman created history by becoming the first Indian to win gold in the men's singles tennis event of the Asian Games. He upset top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-2 in the final. The two bronze medals were secured by ace discus thrower Krishna Poonia and G G Pramila in women's heptathlon. With the addition of the three medals, India's medal haul climbed to 7 gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze. On the 11th day of competitions, India were standing 8th when reports last came in. In Men's Hockey, India lost to Malaysia 3-4 on extra-time in the second semi-final. The Rajpal Singh-led side will now play South Korea for the bronze medal.
