Somali pirates seize Indian dhow with 14 people on board

The Somali pirates have seized Indian dhow with 14 people on board off the coast of Oman. The Directorate of Shipping on Wednesday disclosed in New Delhi that the vessel was hijacked on 9th of this month near Salalah.In a similar recurring attacks last year, the Somali pirates had captured 11 dhows with over 100 Indians on board. Repeated attacks on Indian vessels had prompted the government to issue warning to dhows about the dangers in those waters, particularly along the sea-lanes of Salalah and Male.AIR correspondent reports, with pirates expanding their influence from the Gulf of Aden to the Arabian Sea, close to Indian territory, the Navy is planning to equip its sailors with sniper rifles to deal with the threat.Navy has deployed its ships in the Gulf of Aden since December 2008 and has also increased its presence in the central Arabian Sea to deter the pirates from increasing their influence in the region.
