Social Impact Assessment to be conducted before acquiring land: Jairam Ramesh

Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that Social Impact Assessment will be done before acquisition of any land under the proposed National Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011. Talking to reporters at Berhampur in Orissa yesterday, Mr. Ramesh said, the assessment will be conducted not by the concerned company or government, but by the Panchayat. He said, the government is trying to introduce the Bill in the current session of Parliament. Many suggestions are pouring in on the bill and some of them will be incorporated. Mr. Ramesh also said, the government proposes to provide livelihood support to the land losers and also the persons affected by the land acquisition. He said, the state governments will be allowed to provide extra benefits over and above those stipulated in the proposed Act.
