Social activist Irom Chanu Sharmila re-arrested by Manipur police

Two days after she was released on court orders, civil rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila was on Friday re-arrested by the Manipur police on fresh charges of attempt to commit suicide. The human rights activist was in jail on the charges of committing suicide from November 2000.

Manipur Police have rearrested Irom Sharmila on the same charge of attempting to commit suicide under 309 of IPC and she has been kept now under medical care at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Imphal. Just after the release from jail on Wednesday, she continued her fast unto death demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state. Hospital sources said, she is physically weak; however her vital organs are stable. Sharmila has refused nose feeding, but she has been given IV drips. In its order of releasing Sharmila from jail, the Sessions Court, Manipur East directed the government to take care of her health.
