The foggy weather is favouring smugglers from across the border to smuggle narcotics and Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) into Indian Territory in Punjab.<br/> Quoting official sources, AIR Jalandhar Correspondent reports that since the start of the year, five attempts have been made by smugglers to sneak narcotics and FICN into Punjab. All the attempts had been thwarted by the ever vigilant Border Security Force (BSF).<br/> AIR correspondent Rajesh Bali reports from Jalandhar that according to Dy. Inspector General, BSF, Punjab Frontier, Mr. Jagir Singh Sra, in this process, BSF has shot dead a Pakistani smuggler and recovered 5.5 kg heroin, a pistol and nearly 20 lakh Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) from his possession, early this year. The total number of unscrupulous elements killed on Punjab border in 2008 was 11 as compared to four, last year.<br/>A total of 10.5 Kg contraband has also been recovered by the BSF, in this month, till date.<br/> In the year 2008, 101 Kg. of heroin was seized by the Force. The quantity of seizure increased to more than 120 Kg. in 2009 besides poppy husk. Even the FICN seized in the whole previous year was about 64 lakh as compared to 2008 when it was about 20 lakh, almost similar to what BSF has seized in this month only.<br/> Meanwhile, apprehensions on border in the year 2008 were 216, the number decreased to 132 in the previous year. This year just two people, both incoming and outgoing, have been apprehended by the BSF, till today.<br/>DIG Sra has assured that the BSF is fully prepared to thwart any attempt by smugglers or by anti-national elements from across the border to either themselves sneak into our territory or slither any illegal material.
