Smoke on sub INS Sindhuratna off Mumbai coast, injured sailors hospitalized

A heavy smoke was detected on an Indian Navy submarine, INS Sindhuratna, off the Mumbai coast this morning.Confirming the news, Naval Commander Rahul Sinha told AIR that few navy personnel, who fell unconscious due to suffocation, were airlifted and admitted to a Navy hospital in Mumbai.

He said the reason behind the incident is not yet known. Sinha also said that the smoke has been completely defused. Senior Navy officials have also been informed and the authorities are taking stock of the situation.

The INS Sindhuratna, a kilo-class submarine, was being sea tested after
a refit, about 40 to 50 km off the Mumbai coast when the smoke was
detected. Since it was still in testing mode, it had not been placed under
operational command yet.
