A Smart Card project will soon be launched throughout the country to check leakages and diversion in the Public Distribution System. A pilot project to this effect was first started in Haryana. The Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Minister Sharad Pawar disclosed this while addressing the concluding session of the Economic Editors’ Conference in New Delhi on Wednesday. AIR correspondent reports that the smart card is a small multipurpose plastic card with an embedded micro chip which can be programmed for different applications. The monthly entitlement of consumers will be stored in the card and all transactions at fair price shops will be performed only on the production of the card.
